I represent Everything You Fear - dedicated to Adrian Piper - Here Comes A Wicked Witch of East - Bristol

You and Your Work 2 , Curated by Birgit Binder and Sylvia Rimat, Cube Cinema, Bristol 2007

NaoKo orchestrates interventions into architectural and urban spaces and generate public ‘sculptures’ through a performance of writing that results in a documentation of process, site and encounter.

Cont... Finish the first panel, looking very VERY big, move to the next panel, realise the second panel is smaller than the first one, count the grits, check where to start. Start stitching again, hear a voice, he says, “Pretty!” see him walking past, keep stitching, not sure if he meant about the stitching, not sure if he meant something else, get back to stitching.

Hear a voice, she says, “Does it say something?” I say, “Yes, it’s only half way.” She says, “What is it going to say?” I say nothing, She says, “Oh, come back tomorrow?” I say nothing. Hear her interpreting my silence, see her walking past, keep stitching.

See the grey in the air, feel raindrops on the hands, try to finish the one started, feel the bigger drops on the ground. Rush to tie the end of the red, put everything back in the bag, rush out to find somewhere to keep away from the rain.

See no more rain on the street, go back to the fence, start stitching, hear voices, she says, “If you ask that lady, she should answer it, shouldn’t she?” see mother and a little girl walking together, see them walking past, she the little girl looking at her mother, see the mother looking at the stitching, see them walking past. Get back to stitching, try to do it quicker, find it easier with smaller grits, start getting very fast, keep stitching.

Hear a voice from a car, see a man in the car, he says, “That’s really good!” see his thumb up, see the car moving forward, keep stitching. Move to a bigger fence again, start stitching from the top, climb up the fence, stretch the arm to reach the top, feel the shiny red falling backwards, start getting panicky, feel the heart beating fast. Hold the shiny red, see people looking at the shiny red, see them reflected on the window, keep holding the shiny red, keep still, see them walking past. The phone rings. Getting even more panicky, answer the phone with one hand, hold the shiny red on the other, explain to him about the incident, getting really really panicky,... Cont.

Day 1

Day 1

Cont... Keep stitching, see the second word getting completed, hear a voice, he says, “The land of what?” I say nothing, He says, “The land of… freedom?” I say nothing, “The land of….. peace?” I say nothing, “The land of what?! … Come back tomorrow? Oh, co’m on!” I say, “Sorry, I’m not telling you.” He says, “Oh, go on. I won’t be around here tomorrow.” I say,  “I haven’t finished it and if I tell you what it is, it will spoil it. sorry…” See him getting annoyed, not changing my mind, feel mean doing it, not changing my mind still. See him walking away, go back to stitching.

Keep stitching, leave a big blank on the fence before going to the next word, walk side ways to have enough space, check the sheet with text on, start stitching. Hear a voice, see her with two children, she says, “What does it say? The land of what?” I say nothing, “Oh, come back tomorrow? Ok.” Explain about the event, she says, “I see…. I like your hair. It’s a really nice colour.” I say, “Thank you.” see them walking away, feel strange about the shiny red, feel strange about getting compliment on it, decide not to worry too much, keep stitching.

Feel the heat on the body, see the light in the sky, see a foxy lady(?) walking at the top of the street, keep stitching, see her disappearing into mist, keep stitching. Hear a voice, see a man in a car, see the car slowly moving, almost stopping, he says, “Are you alright?” I say, “Yes! Thank You!” try not to have eye contact, go back to stitching, not quite sure what to think, getting paranoid, start having a flash back, of the time I was in certain area, decide not to worry too much, keep stitching...
